Task 1: Exploration

In this task we were told to put our understanding of the various design principles covered in this module to use, thus, we must study and analyse design components. Each of these needs to have a blog post about it.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Gestalt Theory

- First and foremost, the meaning of gestalt itself refers to "shape" or "form" in German.
- Gestalt principles are a set of rules that specify how the human eye interprets images.
- These principles aim to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simpler shapes.
- There's 5 principles of Gestalt theory:

1. Principle of Similarity

Elements which look similar seem to be a group.

2. Principle of continuation

https://pin.it/w2WP0fQ9K

Elements which are ordered in a line or curve seem to be a group.

3.  Principle of Closure

https://pin.it/30uCkYSFB

The human brain ignores gaps and tries to understand the bigger context.

4. Principle of  Proximity

Elements whichare close together seem to be a group.

  1. Principle of Figure/Ground

Figure 1.1 Gestalt theory ( https://pin.it/6LFSXAVZM )

The picture I've chose is categorised in Principle of Figure/Ground, which where you can either see the flowers detailing or as you put your focus to the background also you will see a face shaped. Therefore,  this art has shown the meaning of Principle of Figure/Ground.

Contrast

- The juxtaposition (the act of placing two or more thing side by side to compare or to create an interesting   effects) of dramatically opposing elements creates contrast.
- The visual experience would be dull without contrast.
- Contrast can provide visual interest, emphasis a point and express content.

Figure 1.2 Contrast ( https://pin.it/6owXWaHTb )

The colour of the background (red) and the object (blue) makes it contra and very eye-catching.

Emphasis

- Emphasis  is used to create dominance and focus in design work.
- Various of elements can be use to create emphasis, such as colour, shapes or value to achieve dominance.

Figure 1.3 Emphasis (https://pin.it/55VA8bcBZ)

In this picture to create emphasis they used colour and shapes to make it this art looks interesting.

Balance

-Balance refer to the distribution of visual impact in a work of design.
-The visual equilibrium of the elements can cause the total image to appear balanced.
-Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Figure 1.4 Balance ( https://pin.it/3vH1MJQz8 )

This picture shows a symmetrical in architecture, the design principles of balance also can be used in architecture to make it look cohesive and visually appealing space.

Repetition

- Repetition could make the design seem active.
- The repetition creates rhythm and pattern within the work.
- Variety in using elements to keep the rhythm exciting and active this is to avoid a dull design.

Figure 1.5 Repetition (https://pin.it/y5wQgA0lM )

The usage of variety in elements makes this design looks lively besides with the choices of the colour makes this design even more standing out.

Movement

-The way a design leads the eye in, around and through a composition or the path the eye follows.
-Motion or movement in a visual image occurs when the objects seem to be moving in a visual image.
-Movement in a visual images comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines and curves.

Figure 1.6 Movement (https://pin.it/4kBYjNZiQ )

As you can see for this visual image the artist only using a line to create the movement to this piece. Thus, this piece is without a doubt is design principle of Movement.

Unity

- Repetition of particular elements throughout your design — whether they're colours, shapes or materials.
- Creating balance and give a sense of oneness, to create a theme.

Figure 1.7 Unity ( https://pin.it/4LvICT6Tp )

The repetition of the colours and shapes in this picture has given this work unity and has created a sense of oneness.

Harmony  (Find a new one)

- Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
- Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. May it be the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

Figure 1.8 Harmony (https://pin.it/4MHFl58eV)

The choices of colour has made this picture to have a common trait and creating it's own aesthetic even though with a various of shapes and elements were using in the picture.

Symbol

- A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else. (Cambridge Dictionary, 2020)
- In design, symbol can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences or text, or even a whole story. ( Eco, 1976 & Pettersson, 2015)
- Graphic symbols:
  1. Pictorial symbols
  2. Abstract symbols
  3. Arbitrary symbols
Figure 1.9 Symbol (https://pin.it/745FOJ34v)

Word and Image

-Viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. Therefore, using the right images in designing is very crucial.
-Choosing the right words to pair with image is also important this may deepen the meaning of the design. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning will result in visual hierarchy and balance in work of design.
- Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.

United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG)

Goals 13

The world's present actions and plans to address the climate crisis are   insufficient, and a global catastrophe is inevitable.  The lives of over 3 billion people will be at risk if the 1.5°C target is not met, and this can only be achieved by taking drastic action now, starting this decade, to decrease greenhouse gas emissions substantially and quickly in all sectors of the economy. Heatwaves, droughts, flooding, wildfires, sea level rise, and famines worsen when nothing is done. By 2030, or just seven years from now, pollution must be reduced almost in half from where they are currently. In order to satisfy the obligations made under the Paris Agreement regarding mitigation and adaptation efforts, swift and revolutionary action is required in order to tackle climate change and its effects by 2030.

Goal 13: Climate Action - Oil Painting

Title - The Future's in our Hands! (2019)
Artist - Zoe Elizabeth Norman

My description:

I opt for this painting because it captures the current state of affairs: technology is gaining ground, the world is progressing, and human greed will only grow. When nature collapses, which they may have caused in order to forward their own agendas, humans will ignore it. Seeing what was once a lush planet turn into just a memory for us is depressing. Therefore, the UNSDG has made their move to spread awareness across the world. Which states in one of their target 13.3 is to improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaption, impact reduction and early warning. Thus, I think this piece by Zoe Elizabeth Norman can help UNSDG to achieve their goal through the picture form.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2

Choose another artwork because this seems like an ai generated works. Besides that put an artist statement before my own interpretations and include three design principles from the poster and describe it. Analysts a goal from (UNSDG) and include it in my interpretation.

Week 3

Add picture to each points (Gestalt Theory). No need description for the three design principles and the artist statements too. Add 'Symbols' as one of the design principle.

REFLECTION

Experience

Through out this task I've gained more knowledge and understanding about design elements and principles. I've also have learnt about UNSDG goals which will help to save our earth which I wasn't aware before this. As I learnt their goals it makes me wanting to join hands together with them, maybe with making a poster or paintings as I am a design students, this also will help me to improve my works at the same time.

Observation

Ever since I've watched the lecture videos that was provided for us, I've been observed every paintings, posters, designs and any types of digital drawing, I've find myself observing the elements and principles of designs in them. Thus, I've been doing it for a while and try to figure it out what makes those paintings or posters stand out and interesting.

Findings

I've find out that most of the designers they usually will using design principles of Contrast, Emphasis and Repetition in their works to attract people. While, these components is really straight to the point and easily for people to notice the difference in one glance.

Oil Painting by Zie Elizabeth Norman

Since the artist is from Indonesia, it appears from her description that she describes the challenges that are happening in her native country as well as the present state of her artwork utilising real-life facts. Indonesia is one of the world's top emitters of carbon dioxide due to deforestation, which puts wildlife in risk including tigers, elephants, rhinos, and orangutans. It also destroys trees and other plants that are essential to the biodiversity of our planet.

The situation of the orangutan population in Borneo and Indonesia is the painting's next main focus.

It claims that "Human activities and selfishness" are to blame for the environmental devastation that is occurring there.

Finally, she advises us in her description to plant trees rather than cut them down if we want to have any chance of preserving our planet for future generations. We were additionally told to stay away from any products that use palm oil in order to lessen the destruction of the rainforest that still exists form her description.
