Stop Motion Shorts

Figure 1.7 Bench by Rich Webber, Link

This short stop motion was directed by Rich Webber. The style of this short film is very simple, it's likely the trees at the back they was using a cardboard and the bench and dustbin were using a mini wooden therefore the character itself was using a clay and you could even see the trace of thumbprint on the clay. The reason why I chose this stop motion is because of the short duration and the unexpected plot twist at the end. It was all cute and fluffy at the beginning but the ending was shocking thus, this makes this stop motion itself interesting.

Figure 1.8 Good Intentions by Anna Mantrazis, Link

This short film told the viewers about how decision making is very important in our life as well as we have to be responsible on every mistakes and moves that we have made or else the guilts can eats away and ghosting ourselves till the end. As to the characters, the material for it maybe they was using a felt to make the fluffy puppet looks. As to why I chose this stop motion is because it won an award-winning for stop motion and the plot as well as the animation was pretty interesting and smooth.

Figure 1.9 TO FIT IN by Lili Giacobino, Link

In this stop motion, it talks about how the girl face was shaped differently and how she can't blend herself to the society but as her failed and make her decision she was way more happier with the second choice she was given to as she decided to be herself and only be with the positive people than toxic people. The characters was well made using a clay as the clip also showing the behind the scene on how the artist made the characters and props.

Background, Middle ground and Foreground example

Depth of field example

Depth of field refers to the range of distance within a scene that appears acceptably sharp in an image. In simpler terms, it's what's in focus and what's not. When you adjust your camera's focus, you're essentially determining the depth of field.

Left : Shallow | Right : Deep (depth of field) example

In deep depth of field (also known as large depth of field), both the background and foreground are sharp and clear. The viewer can also see all the details in the frame.

A shallow depth of field describes a small area or part of the image in focus, where things away from the main subject become blurry. A deep depth of field has a large area in focus.

  • The 180-degree rule, sometimes referred to as the axis of action or the line of action, is a basic principle that controls how actors and objects relate to one another in space during a scene in video and film production. It guarantees the viewer's visual coherence and continuity.
  • In the context of cinematography, continuity is the seamless and regular progression of visual components, events, and story details throughout a motion picture or video production. In order to keep the audience fully engrossed in the story, it makes sure that there are no abrupt or perplexing breaks in the narration.
  • Yes, the video does adhere to the 180 degree rule as the filmmaker painting the camera movement on one line called axial line. This is maintain consistency in screen direction and to make it easier for viewers to follow the action.

Filmmakers that purposefully deviate from the 180-degree norm in order to infuse a scene with visual suspense or confusion are employing dynamic screen direction. They break the imaginary course of action to create a creative effect; this is a common technique in suspenseful genres like horror films and psychological thrillers.

As the night passed, she was listening to a podcast that started to make her contemplate her life.

Act 2: The next day, she received a notification from an unknown guy from her country asking for her to translate his book into Japanese. In order for him to make profits in Japan through his work, she decided to help him with it, but she has to wait until the hard copy is delivered to her. As the days passed, while waiting for the book to reach Japan, they kept in contact with each other and never missed a single day of having a face-time call just to update their daily lives.

Act 3: Suddenly, she got a message from the guy named Nut that he had arrived in Japan along with the book. But with the fear of getting rejected by the person she's having fun talking to, she asked him to go back instead, not wanting to meet Nut in person. As Nut respected her wishes, he decided to leave his book on top of the cafe table and sent a message for the last time to ask her to read the book at least. Everything, everywhere, all at once

1- 3-act structure

Act 1: Middle-aged Chinese-American Evelyn Wang runs a struggling laundromat with her upbeat spouse, Waymond. The presence of Evelyn's strict father, Gong Gong, and their tense connection with their daughter Joy—who feels misunderstood because of her LGBT identity—further complicate their lives. Evelyn meets a parallel-universe version of her husband, Alpha Waymond, during a tense visit to the IRS. Alpha tells Evelyn about Jobu Tupaki, an alternate Joy, a force that destroys universes. Evelyn is thrown into the multiverse struggle when Jobu Tupaki's agents launch an attack, despite her initial scepticism. She starts verse-jumping, calling up memories and abilities from her past selves.

Act 2: Evelyn makes allies and overcomes strange obstacles set up by Jobu Tupaki as she travels through other universes. She finds out that Jobu Tupaki's nihilism is caused by his excessive knowledge of every conceivable universe, which prompted him to create the "everything bagel," a structure that resembles a black hole and threatens to devour everything. When Jobu Tupaki confronts Evelyn, she starts to understand her desperation and starts to doubt her own life. Evelyn makes the compassionate decision to confront Jobu Tupaki after realising the value of her relationships with her family. In a pivotal encounter, she persuades Joy/Jobu Tupaki to retreat from the edge of oblivion.

Act 3: After having had a change of heart, Evelyn returns to her original universe, makes peace with Waymond, accepts Joy for who she is, and celebrates her daughter's love with Becky. The family is together and full of hope for the future despite the constant difficulties. With Evelyn, Waymond, and Joy experiencing a sincere moment of connection and prepared to embrace the limitless possibilities of their life together, the movie finishes on a positive note.

2- Inciting incident

The inciting incident occurs during a tense visit to the IRS office. While Evelyn Wang is dealing with their tax issues, she encounters Alpha Waymond, an alternate version of her husband from a parallel universe. Alpha Waymond informs her that she is the key to stopping a powerful, universe-destroying force known as Jobu Tupaki, an alternate version of her daughter Joy. This revelation thrusts Evelyn into the multiverse conflict and sets the plot in motion.

3- What is the midpoint scene in the movie?

Evelyn meets Jobu Tupaki at this point, and it is he who unveils the "everything bagel," a black hole-like structure fashioned from nihilistic despair after experiencing every conceivable universe. Evelyn is forced by this encounter to acknowledge the severity of Jobu Tupaki's existential dilemma and reevaluate her strategy for preserving the multiverse.

4- What is the climax scene in the movie?

When Evelyn approaches Jobu Tupaki and shows compassion rather than using force. Through compassion and understanding, she persuades her daughter Joy/Jobu Tupaki to back off from the "everything bagel," averting the multiverse's demise.

5- What is the theme of the movie?

Is the pursuit of connection and meaning in the face of turmoil. The movie looks at existentialism, the value of family ties, and how empathy and understanding can lift people out of a dark place. It highlights that connections and love are what really give life meaning, even in the face of limitless options and difficult decisions.
