INSTRUCTION

Proposal Development (20%)
Timeframe: Week 01 – 03

For our group project, we will develop an innovative concept that introduces unique social, cultural, and/or economic value to our target audience within our field of specialization. For our first task, we will begin by conducting thorough research on current technology and design trends that influence and set benchmarks in our area. This will help us gain a deeper understanding of the industry landscape and identify opportunities for innovation. To support our proposal, we will analyze case studies and provide reports on product/service functionality, effectiveness, technical innovations, challenges, aesthetics, and design appreciation. Our project will address an identified gap, where we have discovered opportunities to create and capture value in a novel and meaningful way.

Design Proposition (30%)

Timeframe: Week 04 - 05

Students will build upon their initial proposal by developing a comprehensive final design proposition. This stage will involve curating the production process while showcasing resourcefulness and creativity in managing resources and mitigating potential risks. The goal is to develop effective solutions that address challenges in complex, dynamic environments and real-world contexts.

The design proposition must be well-supported with relevant evidence, incorporating thorough analysis and references that strengthen key arguments. Justification of design choices should be clear and compelling.

Additionally, students must demonstrate how their design solution effectively meets a specific need within their target audience. This will be achieved through the creation of a new product or service that delivers meaningful social, cultural, or economic value. Emphasis will be placed on attention to detail, ensuring that the final execution aligns with industry standards. This includes organization, content development, presentation formatting, aesthetics, and overall style within the chosen area of specialization.

Concept Presentation (40%)
Timeframe: Week 06 - 07

The project presentation showcases the final outcome of how my design solution effectively meets a specific need within my target audience. This is achieved through the development of a newly created product or service that offers distinctive social, cultural, or economic value.

The emphasis will be on meticulous attention to detail and the seamless execution of industry-specific conventions. This includes strong organization, compelling content, professional presentation formatting, refined aesthetics, and a cohesive design style within my area of specialization.

PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT

Week 1| Topic Discussion

In this week, we were briefed to get into a group of four people with the same specialisation and we were also tasked with a group discussion upon our very first assignments for this module. This is where we have to discuss a topic to do something relating to our specialisation which our's are graphic design.

As the discussion went on, each one of us has came up with severals ideas, such as:
  • Redefining a festival
  • Creating an album/ season greetings (inspired by the K-pop's merchandise)
  • Bread Company
Proposal slides

Thus, we have compiled all of the ideas and came up with the problem statement per each of the ideas as instructed by Miss Anis. As we get more feedbacks from her, we have rethink about the final topic we want to do and all of us have agreed to proceed with the first idea of us which was to redefining a festival or to be more specific 'Redefining Good Vibes Festival'.

Week 2| Proposal slide preparation

As we in the progressing to do our slide for presentation, Miss Anis asked us to study more about our target audience as well as look up both strengths and weaknesses of others festival that are in Malaysia and has the strengths to be put into the project of redefining.

Thus we have studied the S.W.O.T for,
  • Pasts Good Vibes Festivals
  • Rainforest Music Fest
  • JIWAKACAU Fest

Pasts Good Vibes Festival

S: strenght
  • Bring in the international artist, resulting to foreign visitors to Malaysia
W: weaknesses
  • Poorly design merchandise and lack of variety
  • Poster is not consistent and lack of visual hierarchy
  • Lack of eye catching elements
  • Imitating coachella
O: opportunities
  • Rebranding the festival
  • Find their one style
  • Striking visuals
T: threats
  • The low presence of branding could endangered the business
  • Copyright

JIWAKACAU Festival

S: strengths
  • Well suits the theme
  • Attracting Gen Z
  • Promotional on social media are well made
W: weaknesses

Thus, with these information we have more ideas on how to improve on our redefining good vibes project.

FEEDBACKS

Week 1

We have to come up with the problem statement in order to support our ideas for each one of the idea. The idea for the bread company is too boring if we want to go with that option we have to make it our idea's different (e.g, designing and creating a gluten-free packaging) as this has not been widely explored in the market. To make our idea stand out, we need to identify a unique problem within the bread industry and propose an innovative solution. For example, we could focus on sustainable and functional packaging for gluten-free bread, ensuring it maintains freshness while being eco-friendly. Another approach could be enhancing the accessibility of gluten-free options by designing packaging that clearly communicates nutritional benefits and caters to individuals with dietary restrictions.

Then again, we have a second thoughts about this bread company idea as we afraid we can't do our best to proceed with this idea. Thus, with Miss Anis feedbacks she said that our ideas for redefining the festival could actually works and it was interesting idea to go for.

Week 2

Please improve the problem statement and thing on how would this affect the festivals if nothing are improving and how many festivals in Malaysia having others competitive and how strong does good vibes presence to compete with all these festivals in Malaysia.

Week 3

Since the festival got cancelled for the pasts few years, Miss Vitiyaa suggested that we can include the idea where we want to make a comeback with a different vibes and look upon the redefining project of Good vibes in order to make it to have more strong presence.

Week 4

Upon the feedbacks we got from both Miss Anis and Miss Vitiyaa, we have to think on how to create an immersive experiences for the festivals as per the feedback that we got where they mentioned that "we can try to include an immersive experience for our festivals to make it more interesting than the previous festivals". Meanwhile, we also need to add more merchandise and free gifts to our collateral.

Week 6

After the feedbacks from Miss Anis, from the initial sketches that we've shown and a few mockups we were did not get the best compliment as our work was still under development while we should have finalised things as the week after we have to submit and present.

Miss Anis does help us to improve our work by giving us feedbacks and ideas on how our group should finalised things.

Her insights helped refine our direction, ensuring that our work was more cohesive and aligned with our objectives. Even with a limited role, her contributions were thoughtful and strategic, bringing valuable perspectives that improved our final outcome.

Andrea’s ability to provide constructive feedback and fresh ideas demonstrated her keen eye for detail and understanding of our project’s goals. Her input, though subtle, played a crucial part in strengthening our overall concept and execution.

REFLECTIONS

Observation

Throughout this task, I observed the importance of collaborative ideation in the early stages of project development. The brainstorming sessions allowed the group to explore diverse ideas, including festival rebranding, K-pop-inspired merchandise, and a bread company concept. Additionally, conducting SWOT analyses on existing festivals such as Good Vibes Festival and JIWAKACAU Fest provided valuable insights into their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This process emphasized the significance of understanding industry trends and market positioning when developing a new concept.

Findings

We discovered that authenticity in branding is crucial. Many festivals attempt to imitate global events like Coachella, resulting in a lack of unique identity. This highlighted the need for original concepts that cater specifically to local audiences. Additionally, our research revealed a growing demand for well-designed festival merchandise, presenting an opportunity to enhance the overall event experience. Another key takeaway was the necessity of a consistent visual identity, as inconsistent branding can weaken a festival’s impact and recognition.

Experience

The experience of working on this task was both insightful and rewarding. Conducting SWOT analyses and target audience research provided a structured approach to evaluating potential project directions. Receiving feedback from peers and instructors helped refine our ideas, leading to a more focused and viable concept. Furthermore, collaborating as a team improved our ability to analyze, synthesize, and communicate ideas effectively. Overall, this task reinforced the importance of thorough research, authentic branding, and cohesive design strategies in creating successful projects.
